People often ask me why I started The Charles Henry Center. The answer begins long before I ever opened a residential program.

As a child, I watched my older brother spend part of his teenage years living in group homes. Years later, while attending college, I began working in residential treatment to help pay my tuition and expenses. What began as a way to support myself quickly became a calling. I experienced the profound influence that caring adults can have on a person’s life, and I realized that everyone deserves more than a service or a place to stay—they deserve a place where they can heal, grow, and be genuinely cared for.

That vision became The Charles Henry Center.

Our organization proudly bears the name of my grandfather, Charles Henry Douglas. Growing up in a small town, I watched my grandmother care for children through her daycare while my grandfather became “Paw Paw” to nearly everyone around him. He taught me that showing up consistently, treating people with dignity, and caring for others without expecting anything in return leaves a legacy that lasts far beyond a lifetime. His example continues to shape the way we serve every person entrusted to our care.

From the moment a person enters one of our homes or begins receiving services from us, I want them to experience something different.

I don’t want them to feel like they are simply receiving a service. I want them to feel like they are part of a community that genuinely cares about them.

Across our residential and community-based programs, we intentionally create environments where the people we serve can comfortably live, grow, and work toward the goals outlined in their individual plans. Safety, structure, warmth, and dignity should never be mutually exclusive. Growth and healing happen best in environments where people feel secure, respected, and cared for.

One thing I hope people always say after visiting one of The Charles Henry Center’s homes is, “This is the cleanest and nicest residential facility I’ve ever been in.” Not because appearances are our priority, but because excellence is. We believe the people we serve deserve beautiful spaces, organized environments, and homes that reflect their worth. The condition of our homes communicates the value we place on every person who lives there.

To every employee who joins our team, I offer one expectation above all others: show up with intention.

Showing up for the people we serve is a choice. Since you’ve chosen to be here today, make your presence matter. We are not here to babysit. We are here to make an impact.

Many of the individuals entrusted to our care have experienced trauma, instability, inconsistent support, or other challenges throughout their lives. While we are not here to replace their families or natural supports, we are here to provide guidance, consistency, accountability, and healthy examples that can positively influence their lives.

My leadership philosophy is simple:

Every person and every plan is unique, but our goal remains the same: to help each individual achieve the goals established by their team, experience meaningful growth, and reach their highest level of independence and success. Success is measured not simply by the completion of a service or transition from a program, but by lasting progress.

The work we do is challenging, but it is also deeply meaningful. My commitment to this mission is rooted in my faith and reflected in the words of Nehemiah 6:3:

That scripture reminds me daily that this is kingdom work. It is a calling to serve people with excellence, compassion, and unwavering commitment. We will not be distracted from the work God has placed before us.
